CAUTION
On December 20, 2017, the Knights of Hanoi launched a malicious program ("The Tower of Hanoi") targeting the Japanese cyberspace "Link Virtual Reality Artificial Intelligence Network System" ("VRAINS") produced by SOL Technologies. SOL reported to the United States government that an anomalous construct appeared within VRAINS and presented an immediate threat to critical online and offline network infrastructure. The Tower of Hanoi carried a payload that, if unleashed, would critically damage every device connected to the Internet, then use connected mainframes to release electromagnetic pulses to destroy the contents of offline devices. The full scope of the damage this would cause is yet to be determined. On December 20, 2024, Jack was confirmed to be among one of the conspirators behind the Bethlehem Incident in Neo Domino City alongside notorious terrorist Murakumo, personally co-operating in the hostile takeover of the city's Ener-D Reactor and the unauthorized activation and subversion of prototype Sector Security automated units. After a standoff with Sector Security, Murakumo and her subordinates, including Jack, fled the scene without leaving lasting damage to the Reactor. The purpose of their raid is yet to be determined.

The Knights of Hanoi
This one came from the top - the very top.According to the intelligence provided by the Secret Service, the Knights of Hanoi were an international activist and hacktivist collective and movement primarily known for its various cyberattacks against SOL Technologies, attacking through SOL's online cyberspace "LINK VRAINS".They perpetrated cyber-terrorism to intimidate SOL Technologies and the general public. Prior to the the "Tower of Hanoi" incident, their numbers ranged in the several thousands, though an exact number is impossible to determine. Japanese officials detained many of the lower-ranking individuals and one of the top lieutenants after the Tower Incident. It seems that the group has largely disbanded. Criminals with ties to the Knights regularly appear, but none seem to claim any association with the organization anymore, working entirely independently.

Notes: Apparently, Hanoi had been a thorn in SOL Technologies' side for a while, but it wasn't until they brought out the Tower that things started to concern the US.In my opinion, this whole thing was a fucking joke. A goddamn TV show. Hackers show up, puts everyone running around not knowing where our heads start and asses end - then some kid saves the day, and now we just truck on like usual like it never happened.Nevertheless... SOL has their fingers in at least a third of the world's information infrastructure by now, a lot of it tied up in LINK VRAINS' network. TV show or not, the fact that someone's able to threaten them is bad news for all of us.
Jack Young
Jack Young has always had a reputation with the municipal police forces in Denver, because of her early days as a gangbanger or because of her work as a penetration test hacker for PMC groups operating outside of US territory. She’s certainly smart - accomplishing a lifetime's resume at her early twenties - and her ability to hack computers and networks is astonishing. She’s deeply connected into the network, and can pull strings we didn’t know existed. She’s been able to convince ground commanders to release her from arrest while she's still cuffed on the ground - what kind of dirt does that involve?Luckily, she avoids hacktivism and doesn't seem to have much agenda beyond getting rich. The nature of her operations can range from establishing dime store knock-offs to elaborate well-planted information heists on high-profile corporations.

Notes: Seriously, what the hell. You read what we have on Jack, and you wonder if you've started looking at a movie character instead of a criminal. Young, brilliant, and rich. Rubbing shoulders with some the biggest and the baddest. Is she even human? We're lucky she's just in it for cash. She doesn't pop up on our radars often, only when the wallet is too thin for her tastes - and even then, she usually just deducts a few zeroes from some dipshit corp. Government secrets and the like don't seem to interest her.Even better, if her motivations really are just money, that means we could sway her to our side with the right monetary push. Just need to find the right path to contact her.
"The Tower of Hanoi"
SOL Technologies reported that its LINK VRAINS network, the largest information networks they operate, came under a coordinated and continuous attack by the Knights of Hanoi. The VRAINS network itself was at serious risk of total failure, while network traffic globally slowed but largely unaffected.SOL Technologies' records claim that the attack comprised of two stages: the construction of the titular Tower, and then its detonation. The Tower was constructed using waste data regularly cleared out from VRAINS' cache to form its initial stage. Once established, it grew to directly siphon data out from the network itself to continue growing. The Tower was deactivated before it finished growing, so exact reports on its effects are unknown. However, analysts from SOL report that the Tower was set to unleash that accumulated data all at once. The immediate effects would be the instantaneous destruction of the entire Internet, then cause mainframes to act as EMP devices, destroying offline devices as well.

Notes: There's a lot we still don't know about the program, and probably never will, unless we managed to get our hands on one of the big boys in Hanoi. I doubt even Jack knows much about it beyond what we already suspect.Still, you don't have to think hard to guess how bad it would have been if the payload on this thing went off... Ignorance is bliss, I guess.
